Katuntu Returns to Bugweri Race for Fifth Term
Long-serving Bugweri County MP Abdul Katuntu has been duly nominated to seek a fifth term in Parliament, warning state officers against meddling in the political process and vowing to continue his development agenda in the district.

The Member of Parliament for Bugweri County, Abdul Katuntu, has cautioned state officers against interfering in the political process, warning that action will be taken against those who engage in partisan activities during the 2026 elections.

Speaking on Thursday after being duly nominated at the Bugweri District Electoral Commission offices in Busesa, Katuntu said he had previously remained silent because he was not yet a candidate but would now respond firmly to any attempts to undermine the democratic process.

“There are many government officers who abuse their offices and engage in partisan politics. The law is very clear on what they can and cannot do,” Katuntu said.

“I have not been a candidate yet, that’s why I have not taken any action against them. But now that I am a candidate, I would seriously advise those state officers to desist from interfering in the political process because they are going to have a little bit of conflict with us.”

Katuntu added that he and his team have video evidence of some state officers involved in partisan activities, warning that such conduct would not go unchallenged.

The legislator, who is contesting as an independent candidate under the symbol of a chair, said his decision to seek another term was driven by his desire to consolidate development gains achieved during his tenure.

He cited improvements in access to education, health services, and electricity as key achievements, noting that several sub-counties now have seed secondary schools and increased power coverage.

“A number of villages have been lit, and most of the areas like Buyanga had no power but now coverage stands at over 50%,” Katuntu said. “These are the real needs of our people, and they give me sleepless nights. I want to ensure that every household can access essential services.”

Katuntu, who has represented Bugweri for 20 years, first joined Parliament under the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) before running as an independent in 2021. Recently, he was seen alongside the NRM’s Second National Vice Chairperson (Female) during a rally in Bugweri District, where he pledged to support President Yoweri Museveni’s government in implementing development programmes.

He will face several opponents, including NRM flag bearer Hajj Sadala Wandera, NUP’s Kaziba Grace Buninhu, FDC’s Kasango Isma, Makaire Fredrick, and Nakudo Sefatia.
